Overview
As digital content availability surged, Apple TV needed to evolve from a simple content-access device to a platform where users could rent and buy movies and TV shows. This evolution coincided with the launch and growth of the iTunes store. In response to this shift, I invented the media shelf navigation system. As the Apple TV partner ecosystem expanded, I led the transition from a list-based interface to a grid-based design, enhancing consistency across partners and media.

Project Scope
The explosion of digital content availability demanded that Apple TV transform from a basic streaming device into a comprehensive platform for renting and purchasing movies and TV shows. Users were no longer satisfied with simply accessing their existing iTunes libraries — they wanted to browse extensive catalogs, discover new content, and manage purchases directly from their TV.
I created the media shelf navigation system to address this evolution, designing a visually rich yet intuitive interface that worked within the technical bandwidth limitations of the time, when streaming high-resolution imagery and smooth transitions required careful optimization. The media shelf metaphor allowed users to browse through content in a way that felt both familiar and cinematic, with cover art and metadata displayed prominently without overwhelming the screen.
Through disciplined navigation principles and consistent interaction patterns, I maintained ease of use across the diverse content services that were emerging, including Netflix and YouTube, ensuring that whether users were browsing Apple's own content or third-party catalogs, the experience felt cohesive and predictable.

Results + Impact
As the sole UX designer for Apple TV, I owned all aspects of the user experience from end to end. My responsibilities spanned interaction design, motion animation, information architecture, visual design, and the creation of production-ready specifications for engineering. I prototyped new concepts, defined transitions and micro-interactions, mapped out content hierarchies, and documented design systems that would scale across the platform.
Beyond internal design work, I also served as the primary design liaison with external partners, collaborating closely with teams from Netflix, YouTube, and other content providers to establish cohesive design principles that would ensure their services felt native to the Apple TV experience while maintaining their own brand identity.
